Membership & Communications Assistant

Period of engagement: April 2017- December 2017

Location: ASWA Secretariat, Nairobi, Kenya


ASWA is the Pan-African alliance of sex worker-led groups that amplifies the voices of sex workers as well as advocates for the health and human rights of the diverse community of sex workers living and working in Africa.

ASWA’s Membership

ASWA currently has 85 member organisations spread in 26 countries. These members inform ASWA’s work chiefly through the 2017-2020 Strategic Plan, as well subsidiarily, through other ASWA related activities such as the Sex Worker Academy Africa (SWAA), KP REACH, Pan African Advocacy, and Hands Off! Members also serve in other ad-hoc committees such as the ASWA Advisory Committee.

ASWA’s Communication

Informed by our Communication and Advocacy Plan 2017, ASWA engages in both external and internal communication. With a visible online and social media presence, ASWA engages in advocacy, awareness rising, and other causes for sex workers’ rights across the region.


Under the supervision of the Programmes Manager, the intended Membership and Communications Assistant, will be charged with membership engagement, and support the organisation’s communication strategies. They will also be responsible for targeted advocacy, media, and membership liaisons.

Expected responsibilities

  • Support membership liaisons, and engagements with ASWA members including but not limited to face-to-face interviews, members’ profiling, and highlighting members’ activities;
  • Manage ASWA’s Communications aspects, visibility and advocacy plan, including but not limited to branding, and editorial work;
  • Support internal communications of ASWA including but not limited to newsletter production, website, and social media, among others;
  • Support the production of audio-visuals, and other materials for ASWA including but not limited to photos, videos, etc.;
  • Provide conference support and other technical media needs that ASWA requires.


In addition to weekly and monthly reporting to the ASWA Programmes Manager, the Assistant shall generate quarterly narrative reports and a final report of the duration of their project.
