ASWA’s First Champions Programme For Sex Workers Kicks Off

A selected group of leaders of sex worker-led organisations are receiving training to familiarise them with regional and international human rights mechanisms to enhance their ability to engage effectively with these mechanisms.

After the training, the leaders are expected to champion the visibility of sex workers in continental and international platforms especially the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights and the United Nations.

Known as the Champions Programme, the initiative is one of the strategies African Sex Workers Alliance (ASWA) is using to create opportunities to engage and participate in upcoming the upcoming NGO Forum and the Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights meeting at the end of this October in The Gambia.

The NGOs Forum will be held from 28-30 October, 2017 and the Ordinary on 1^st November, 2017.

During the three-day training, participants will be:

• Introduced to and become familiar with the various African and international human rights instruments, knowledge and skills in relation to both theoretical and practical aspects of the instruments
• Equipped with skills to engage with the African human rights system (African Commission, African Court, Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child) – apply for observer status, file complaints/cases, make statements at Commission’s sessions etc),
• Equipped with budgeting, human rights monitoring and reporting skills

A follow-up evaluation will be done six months thereafter, including a 12-month mentorship on a need-as-arises basis.

Le premier programme de champions des travailleurs du sexe démarre.

Un groupe sélectionné des leaders des organisations de travailleurs du sexe sont en train de suivre une formation qui les permettra de s’accoutumer des mécanismes internationaux et régionaux des droits de l’homme afin favoriser un engagement efficace avec ces mécanismes.

Après la formation, ces leaders devraient renforcer la visibilité des travailleurs du sexe dans le continent et sur le biais des plateformes internationales, notamment la commission de l’Union Africaine des Droits Humains et du Peuple aussi que les Nations Unies.

  Cette initiative dénommée programme des champions, est l’une des stratégies que l’Alliance Africaine des Travailleurs du Sexe a mis en place afin de créer des opportunités et de préconiser l’engagement aussi que la participation lors du forum des ONG prévu et la session ordinaire de la Commission Africaine des Droits Humains et du Peuple qui aura lieu en octobre en Gambie.

 Le forum des ONG aura lieu du 28 au 30 octobre, 2017 tandis que la session ordinaire se teindra 1^er  novembre 2017.  

 Lors de la formation de trois jours les participants ;

• Feront la connaissance des instruments africains et internationaux des droits de l’homme, auront les notions de connaissance et compétence par rapport aux aspects théoriques et pratiques de ces instruments.
• Seront outillés de compétences d’interroger les systèmes africains de droits de l’homme (La Commission Africaine, La Cour Africaine, le Comité d’Experts sur les droits et bien être de l’enfant) postuler pour le statut d’observant, déposer/porter plainte, exposer des positions lors de la session de la commission etc).
• Seront outillés de compétence de budgétisation, suivi et préparation des rapports en matière des droits de l’homme.

 Une évaluation de suivi sera menée après six mois, y compris un accompagnement d’une période de 12 mois au cas de besoin.
