The African Sex Workers Alliance (ASWA) has added its voice to the global call for access to safe and legal abortion.
ASWA is among 285 organisations that have signed a joint statement to the UN Human Rights Council, which is currently holding its 36th session in New York, US, calling for an end to criminalisation of abortion by governments around the world.
According to the Sex Rights Initiative, that is leading the campaign, abortion is criminalized in many countries and access to post-abortion care is often restricted.
Around 22 million unsafe abortions are estimated to take place around the world annually leading to 7 million health complications and 47,000 deaths.
“Prohibiting abortion pushes it underground and gives rise to unsafe abortions, violating the rights to life, health and bodily autonomy. We urge the Human Rights Council to address the human rights violations arising from criminalization of abortion and the denial of access to safe and legal abortion services through its resolutions, decisions, dialogues, debates, and the UPR. We demand in a collective voice that governments across the world respect, protect and fulfill the right to access safe and legal abortion services and post-abortion care,” the statement in part, says.
This statement comes a few days before September 28, 2017, when the Global Day of Action for Access to Safe and Legal Abortion is marked.
The Human Rights Council comprises governments of countries that are members of the United Nations and is mandated to strengthen the protection and promotion of human rights.

« L’interdiction d’avortement favorise la clandestinité et conduit à des cas d’avortement à risque, bafouant les droits à la vie, à la sante et à l’autonomie corporelle. Nous exhortons le conseil de droits de l’homme d’aborder les violations des droits de l’homme émanant de la criminalisation d’avortement et le refus d’accès aux services d’avortement sûr et légal à travers ses résolutions, décisions, dialogues, débats et l’ERU (l’Examen Périodique Universel). Sur le biais d’une voix commune nous demandons que les gouvernements à travers le monde respectent, défendent et garantissent le droit à l’accès aux services d’avortement sûr et légal et au soin après avortement » révèle un extrait de la déclaration
La déclaration est émise quelques jours avant le 28 septembre 2017, lorsque le monde fête la journée mondiale de l’action en faveur de l’accès à l’avortement sûr et légal.
Le conseil des droits de l’homme est composé des états membres de la Nations Unies et est mandaté de renforcer le respect et la promotion ses droits de l’homme.
